Titles Task

The assigned task was to Choose one title sequences from films in www.artofthetitle.com, screengrab each title in order, write down the jobs titles and seconds from the start so that you can and the length of each title. Write a summary discussing the various titles, fonts, colors, sound, effects and any meaning that may link them to the genre or narrative. Titles are numbered T1, T2 etc.

I chose to observe and use the credits for the 2016 film Deadpool. The origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life. Tim Miller’s Deadpool has become a complete hit for FOX and Ryan Reynolds, far surpassing anyone’s expectations. Despite the film’s relatively obscure hero and hard R-rating, it has become pretty much a smash box office success overnight. Not only is the movie on track to earn an insane profit, it also as already shattered box office records.

This is the first title that appears in the Deadpool film opening, this is the production label known as marvel films which has produced a variety of superhero movies. Marvel Comics is an American comic book line published by Marvel Entertainment, Inc. Affectionately called the House of Ideas by the fan press, Marvel’s best-known comics titles include Fantastic Four, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Daredevil, Thor, Captain America, and X-Men. Most of Marvel’s fictional characters reside in the Marvel Universe. Since the 1960's, it has been one of the two largest American comic companies, along with DC comics.

This title was introduced on 00:12 second and is literally just the production animation, showing who produced the film.

This is the second title shown and is a slow motion video of a man being forced to swallow a boiling hot cigarette tray which he has spat out, you can also see that it has been put out on his forehead causing a burning scar. The actual title says 'Twentieth century fox' which is one of the biggest distributors and producers in the world which shows how big the film is. This was on the 00:22 second.

This is the third title and is showing a gunshot through what I presume is a mans or woman's leg, the title says 'marvel entertainment' which is once again mentioning the producers that are Marvel. This was on the 00:30 second.

This is the fourth title and is showing a man or woman with a pistol driving the car, the car is obviously at an angle because the camera shot and the fact that the keys are in the air. The title says 'some douche bag's film' this is showing the comical side of the film which is that Deadpool has the powers of a hero but has the ambition of someone who is the exact opposite.

This is the Fifth title and is just about to show the people magazine article which has Ryan Reynolds as sexiest man, and as you probably know Ryan Reynolds is the lead actor whi plays THE DEADPOOL in the film. This emphasizes the fourth wall which has always been a main factor of the comic character. Some characters have been known to 'break the fourth wall' by speaking to, or about, the audience. Not only do they talk to the reader, but they ususally know that they are fictional creations in a story. On occasion, this may be a vehicle for dramatic irony. Deadpool, the most well known example of this phenomenon, has been known to refer to his own history in issue format, lean on the panel borders, and see or touch his thought boxes and word balloons. In this instance the title is 'Gods perfect idiot' which is referring to Ryan Reynolds to himself. This was on the 00:39 second.

This is the Sixth title and is visibly someones arm drenched in dripping blood which further expands the violence being shown in this film opening. The title says 'A hot chick' which is referring to another cast member named Morena Baccarin. This was on the 00:47 second.

This is the seventh title of the film opening and is simply depicting the British villain of the film named Francis and played by the actor Ed Skrein. The man known only as Francis was a longtime government operative that underwent cybernetic enhancement by Doctor Killebrew in Canada's Weapon X program. This was in the 00:51 second.

This is the eighth title which shows another injured man or woman floating through the air presumably because the car has been flipped. If you’ve been following the comic book movie scene for awhile now you’ll know that Deadpool is not exactly Ryan Reynolds’ first rodeo. Back in 2011, he was supposed to the guy who launched the DC cinematic universe when he starred in Green Lantern. It did not go well. The movie was a complete bomb. Reynolds does not shy away from his old alter ego as one of the few images you see in the film during the opening credits is a photograph of a guy dressed as Green Lantern. Later, when beginning to undergo the treatment that will eventually make him Deadpool, he begs that his super suit not be green or animated. He’s been down that road before, and the movie takes every opportunity to poke fun at it. The title says 'the comic relief' which is humorous content in a dramatic or literary work intended to offset more serious episodes. This was in the 00:57 second.

This is the ninth title which is represented with a background of a motorway and it is clearly showing the car rolling over sideways on the road from being flipped. The title says 'moody teen' which is referring to negasonic teenage warhead who is another marvel superhero that is a member of the X-Men. Deadpool completely reinvents her, giving Negasonic a stereotypically teenage attitude and the ability to use charges of energy to create explosions. This was on the 01:01 second.

The tenth title is showing Deadpools crotch area on someones head, so he is making a violent and dangerous situation into a humerus one. You can also see the design of Deadpools costume here which is in direct correlation to the comic series. The title 'a CGI character' is portraying the marvel hero colossus who is played by the actor Stefan Kapicic. Growing up on his parents' farm, Piotr Rasputin saw his older brother Mikhail become a Cosmonaut. Mikhail was later discovered to be a latent mutant with energy warping powers, and to keep him secret the government faked his death. In later years, Piotr learned that he too was a mutant, and could transform his flesh into steel, but he was content to use his powers to help his fellow farmers. This was on the 01:51 second.

This is the eleventh title sequence which is showing the duel swords that are Deadpools chosen weapon, this can possibly portray future battles that will involve these gruesome swords. The title says 'A gratuitous cameo' which is referring to none other than T.J. Miller who is stars typically in comedy films and plays the role of Weasel perfectly. Weasel attended the same college as Peter Parker. If not for a time traveling Deadpool posing as Peter Parker and taking Weasel on a drinking binge, Weasel's life as an A student wouldn't have been ruined, ending up with him as a loser specializing in technology. He eventually became a weapons dealer and partner to Deadpool, as well as a somewhat reluctant friend. This was on the 01:25 second.

On the twelfth title there is a huge exploding bike in the background showing the demolition and destruction that one man named Deadpool can actually do; there is also a man being wedgied by Deadpool and this once again represents the more comical side of the story. The title says 'produced by asshats' is just trying to promote the comedy of the film and break the fourth wall with Deadpools personality. This was on the 01:45 second.

This particular title is showing the front of the car including the engine on fire which will usually explode when ignited. The title says 'written by the real heroes here' this could be refering to the co-producer Stan Lee who cameos in every marvel film as he is the ultimate creator. So, Stan Lee has a very brief cameo in the current Deadpool movie. The mighty Marvel mouthpiece plays the MC in a strip club. It’s basically a blink-and-you-missed-it moment. This was on the 01:49 second.

The final title is showing the whole image that the camera has been moving through, and finishes with the title 'An overpaid tool' which is also referring to the director Tim Miller who has done an amazing job at reaching my expectations and beyond with this brilliant film.
